"THE BIG UNEASY"

A PHILOSOPHIC, artistic, sonic NOVELLA

written, edited, designed, photographed and painted by  VERNELL GARRETT  ©oneboldsoul, inc.

(This is not a sequel. This is an echo)

"The soul of any country is housed in its appreciation for the arts. The arts are proof that your civilized, and like a pinch of cinnamon, sweetens the taste of life all the more. Though art is a luxury, in its absence exists an obscured relationship to humanity at its apex. And when political and social structures begin to fail, it is only through an understanding of the human interior that we can begin to repair the damage of soullessness.

As MILES DAVIS once said, "Jazz is the big brother of Revolution. Revolution follows it around." It speaks across epochs and are an important legacy of some of our grandest achievements. From its inception, jazz has been the documentation of our struggles, defeats and conquests as a country.
As a barometer and thermometer for our well being, jazz is a vehicle through which mentality and spirituality can be developed.
It challenge us to distinguish what’s mature from the quantity over quality myth.

Through the music of their minds, jazz musicians made the ultimate statements of humanity, evidenced by the ease with which it traverses cultures, countries and continents. THE BIG UNEASY" is a 138 page MUSICAL, PHILOSOPHICAL, CULTURAL, and PICTORIAL Novella written, edited, designed, photographed and painted by VERNELL GARRETT. As the third and final installment of a trilogy of Coffee table Books, it is an artistic documentation of human struggle, defeat and conquests.

"Music represents Nature.

Nature represents Life.

Jazz represents Nature.

Jazz is Life.

No one is original.

Everyone is derivative."

SONNY ROLLINS

"In my ego, I saw "GOD" as some venerable, well dressed jazz musician that resembled Sonny Rollins. He looked great for a Deity, because his rustic, tanned face had not been withered by the ravages of time, lost loves or excessive twelve o’clock-tails . . . My "GOD" wore Italian shoes,
a Panama straw hat and an Egyptian cotton shirt that was buttoned to the top with a wide spread European collar. His snow white beard was well trimmed, closely cropped, and his grey eyes were simultaneously saddened and twinkling. . . ."

"For me, jazz embodied the Daoist concept of "controlled freedom". Its musicians epitomized the singular audacity to survive the absurd with dignity and aplomb by distancing themselves from agitation through a means of well-being absent of conflict and filled with transcendental balance. Through "Cool" their cultural and political defiance was hidden behind an inconspicuous fence of ironic indifference which created a distance from the source of agitation rather than directly or inappropriately confronting it . . . "

"Nobody is quite certain why New Orleans is called "The Big Easy" but there are a few theories. While not certain about the origin of that non de plumme, I felt the "THE BIG UNEASY" was LIFE itself. I‘d already learned from my many studies that existence is a beautiful and complex layering of laws and interdependent movements of matter and energy, and to traverse it properly, we must die and be renewed instant by instant. . . "
